DYO #2: Fruit Fly Population Investigation

Problem (Question):How does putting 2 females and 1 male in a jar affect how many adults are gonna be at the end of 3 weeks?

Hypothesis:If we put 2 females and 1 male in a jar, then i expect to see 410 adults because each female lay 20 eggs for day.The eggs take 16 days to become adult. After 3 weeks a female would have 160 eggs, but we have 2 females and 3 fruit flies. We multiply the eggs a male have after 3 weeks(160) by how many females fruit flies were in the jar(2),then add the fruit flies with 3.At the day 21 i expect to see 410 adult fruit flies.

Background Research:These weeks in Science we learn about fruit flies.I did research in class about fruit flies.Females fruit females have the back more dark than males.I learned that fruit flies can have 20 eggs at day.The fruit flies have different stages that are:egg, larva, pupa, and adult. In the egg the fruit flies stay one day,in the lava 7 days,in the pupa 6 days, and in the adults 2 days after that they can start having babies. As you can see the fruit flies have a interesting and hard life.

Procedure:
  • Step 1:First we choose the combination of 2 females and 1 male.
  • Step 2:Then we put the fruit flies to sleep using fly-nap.
  • Step 3:After we put the media in the new vial to make a habitat for the fruit flies.
  • Step 4:Then we need to identified the females and males by looking at the back at put it in the new vial.
  • Step 5:After that we put the fruit flies in and close the jar.
  • Step 6:We started observing 2 others vial with our same combination of fruit flies to see the differences.
  • Step 7:At the end of 3 weeks we gonna count all the fruit flies too find out how many fruit flies can be after 3 weeks.

Data Table and Graph:The effect of # of F & M fruit flies on the # of adult fruit flies at the end of 3 weeks.

Analysis:I looked at 3 different vials for 3 weeks with the same amount of female and male. Each vial had a different number of adults at the end of 3 weeks.Vial 1 had 151 adults.Vial 2 had 105 adults.Vial 3 had 70  adults.

In the begging of my experiment my hypothesis was if we put 2 females and 1 male in a jar, then i expect to see 410 adults.I think this because each female lay 20 eggs for day.The eggs take 16 days to become adults. After 3 weeks a female would have 160 eggs, but we have 2 females and 3 fruit flies. We multiply the eggs a female have after 3 weeks(160) by how many females fruit flies were in the jar(2),then add the fruit flies we start with(3).Then at day 21 i expect to see 410 adults.

My data does not support my hypothesis because the number of adult fruit flies after 3 weeks is 251.This does not support my hypothesis because the number of adults in my vial was 251.This number is lower that i predicted.

Conclusion:In my experiment i try to find out the number of fruit flies would be after 3 weeks with 2 females and 1 male.During my experiment the fruit flies reproduced but not as much as i thought they would.Thats why my data do not support my hypothesis. Some sources error in my experiment could the little space for the fruit flies.Maybe they were too close to each other to reproduce. If i could my improve my experiment if i did it again i would want to give the fruit flies more space. One question I'd like to investigate further would be if the temperature of the room affect the fruit flies reproduction.

Post 11: This Week in Science (No Impact Man)

No Impact Man's year long project is a project a man and his family did.The project consist that him and his family would no impact the environment for a whole year. They life start changing a lot. They start to be vegetarian and eat only farm food. They would not buy anything like paper. They recycled and used solar energy. No trains, planes and automobiles. They did the laundry in the bath tub with their feet. They would put their garbage in a box with worms so they we eat it and not do so many garbages.

No Impact Man's behavior lower his negative impact on the environment by recycling. He stop using electricity, transportation, TV, refrigirator, no laundry, etc.He did this because he wanted to see how he and his family doing this can affect the world is a good way.He bought local food so the food wont be transported from place to place so like it would save more gas.

My reactions and feelings while watching this film was surprised, disgusting and happy.I was surprised because they try to do this project. They survive by eating food from framer market. It was disgusting for the thing the do.They do laundry in their bath tub with their feet and the kind of food their ate.And i was happy because they accomplished their project.I really was happy for them.

Post 10: This Week in Science (Fruit Fly DYO Part 1)

This week in Science we went to different stations. In the first station we write everything we did to put the fruit flies in the jar.In the second station we write the question and background research. And in the last station we write the hypothesis. The second day we went to the same stations again, but this time we did different things. In the fisrt station we pick the 2 jar we want to observe to compare with our jar.In the second station we make graphs to practice. And in the last station we observed out terrarium and write what we saw in our graph.

This week in Science i learned how write a good hypotheses using the form if,why, and because. Also i learned how data our investigations in a graph.I learned how explain the procedure of a investigation. How to graph the data on a graph. And i learned how observe my investigation to than write it on a graph.

Post 9: This Week in Science (Fruit Flies Part 2)

This week in Science we solve the problem "How many fruit flies would be after 3 weeks if we put 3 fruit flies in a jar?"We solve the problem with our group. My group and i solve the problem and graph it in a big paper. After we solve the problem we write a hypothesis about the results we get when we solve the problem. The results of my group were 240 adults and 2800 eggas after 3 weeks.

This week in Science i learned how calculate how many fruit flies can be in a jar after 3 weeks.I learned different  forms of solve the problem. Also i learned how write a hypothesis using if...them...because format.

If i put 6 fruit flies in a jar,4 females and 2 males. Then i expect to observe 240 adults and 2800 eggs because we start with 40 eggs. After 16 days the eggs turn in adults and the process continue.

Post 8: This Week in Science (Fruit Flies)

This week in Science we observed and made some notes of the things we notice and wonder in our habitat. Also we made notes of some Fruit flies that we saw.In my habitat i noticed that have a lot of flies and i wonder how the flies get there. In the fruit flies jar i noticed the different stages of the fruit flies but i didn't saw the egg.I only saw the larva, pupa, and the adult. The next day we solve a problem making our own hypothesis. We need to find how many fruit flies would be after  3 weeks if we put 3 fruit flies in a jar.My hypothesis was that after 3 weeks would be 180 fruit flies.

This week in Science i learned a lot about fruit flies. The 3 stages of life in drosophila melanogaster(Fruit flies) that are:egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Also i leraned that to make babies the fruit flies takes 16 days.In one day they have 20 eggs.I also learned that the females fruit flies are more bigger than the males  fruit flies.

Post 7: This Week in Science (Ecosystems)

This week in Science we design our habitat. After that we prepared our tank to go to the community garden. In the community garden we collected things that we can use for our tank.We found worms, leaves, and little rocks and put in the tank. Then we observed at other tanks to create questions about the tanks. The next day we correct our test of the ecosystem to make connection to our habitat. The last day we research information of one of the organism of our habitat. And we start design our map of the habitat.

This week in Science i learned about leaves by research information about it.Leaves eats water and oxygen and get it energy from the sunlight.Herbivore animals eats the leaves. The leaves are a producer because it produce its own food.In the trophic level, leaves are the first level. And their environment is tropical.

I'm still unsure about how the animals in my tank died. And how other animals in the ecosystems and other tanks still alive.I also unsure of how the spider is going to survive in the close tank.I'm curious of what spiders eats. And i want to know from where the spiders gets their energy.

This two pictures shows how we prepared our tank and how we were looking for organisms in the community garden.

This two pictures shows the spider habitat of my group.

Post 6: This Week in Science (Spider Habitat Design)

This week in science the first day we search information about the spider Pholcidae that is the spider that we are going to use to create the habitat. We design in our notebook ideas we have to create the habitat. The next day we shared our  ideas we our group to create the design of the habitat. We started design our habitat.A side view and a top view. And the last day we play a game to understand the Carbon-Oxygen Cycle.

This week in science i learned about our new project of design our own habitat for a spider.I learned what is in a spider habitat. What they need to survive like food and etc. Also i learned the cycle of carbon and oxygen playing a game.Carbon and oxygen are exchanged in the biosphere in a dynamic cycle:reservoirs and processes.
