DYO #2: Fruit Fly Population Investigation

Problem (Question):How does putting 2 females and 1 male in a jar affect how many adults are gonna be at the end of 3 weeks?

Hypothesis:If we put 2 females and 1 male in a jar, then i expect to see 410 adults because each female lay 20 eggs for day.The eggs take 16 days to become adult. After 3 weeks a female would have 160 eggs, but we have 2 females and 3 fruit flies. We multiply the eggs a male have after 3 weeks(160) by how many females fruit flies were in the jar(2),then add the fruit flies with 3.At the day 21 i expect to see 410 adult fruit flies.

Background Research:These weeks in Science we learn about fruit flies.I did research in class about fruit flies.Females fruit females have the back more dark than males.I learned that fruit flies can have 20 eggs at day.The fruit flies have different stages that are:egg, larva, pupa, and adult. In the egg the fruit flies stay one day,in the lava 7 days,in the pupa 6 days, and in the adults 2 days after that they can start having babies. As you can see the fruit flies have a interesting and hard life.

Procedure:
  • Step 1:First we choose the combination of 2 females and 1 male.
  • Step 2:Then we put the fruit flies to sleep using fly-nap.
  • Step 3:After we put the media in the new vial to make a habitat for the fruit flies.
  • Step 4:Then we need to identified the females and males by looking at the back at put it in the new vial.
  • Step 5:After that we put the fruit flies in and close the jar.
  • Step 6:We started observing 2 others vial with our same combination of fruit flies to see the differences.
  • Step 7:At the end of 3 weeks we gonna count all the fruit flies too find out how many fruit flies can be after 3 weeks.

Data Table and Graph:The effect of # of F & M fruit flies on the # of adult fruit flies at the end of 3 weeks.

Analysis:I looked at 3 different vials for 3 weeks with the same amount of female and male. Each vial had a different number of adults at the end of 3 weeks.Vial 1 had 151 adults.Vial 2 had 105 adults.Vial 3 had 70  adults.

In the begging of my experiment my hypothesis was if we put 2 females and 1 male in a jar, then i expect to see 410 adults.I think this because each female lay 20 eggs for day.The eggs take 16 days to become adults. After 3 weeks a female would have 160 eggs, but we have 2 females and 3 fruit flies. We multiply the eggs a female have after 3 weeks(160) by how many females fruit flies were in the jar(2),then add the fruit flies we start with(3).Then at day 21 i expect to see 410 adults.

My data does not support my hypothesis because the number of adult fruit flies after 3 weeks is 251.This does not support my hypothesis because the number of adults in my vial was 251.This number is lower that i predicted.

Conclusion:In my experiment i try to find out the number of fruit flies would be after 3 weeks with 2 females and 1 male.During my experiment the fruit flies reproduced but not as much as i thought they would.Thats why my data do not support my hypothesis. Some sources error in my experiment could the little space for the fruit flies.Maybe they were too close to each other to reproduce. If i could my improve my experiment if i did it again i would want to give the fruit flies more space. One question I'd like to investigate further would be if the temperature of the room affect the fruit flies reproduction.
